Partial Discharge (PD) magnitude is an important parameter for assessing switchgear insulating performance. The conventional measurement method needs a standard calibration source to calibrate PD detection sensors such as HFCT and TEV. This is a complex process and requires the switchgear to be shut down. Consequently, this paper proposes a noncalibration PD magnitude detection method based on the embedded bushing sensor of the switchgear. This sensor is based on capacitive voltage dividers existing in most bushings, used to indicate the presence of voltage in a cabinet. The test shows that this method provides similar results to the traditional sensor, and complies with the IEC60270 standard.
