Automotive millimeter wave radar is the key perception sensor in intelligent vehicles. Many Advanced Driving Assistance System (ADAS) functions rely on the millimeter wave radar to realize. The performance of the millimeter wave radar is crucial to the autonomous driving. Therefore, it is necessary to test and evaluate the performance of the millimeter wave radar. Simulation-based laboratory tests and field-operational tests are two kinds of validation methods which are widely employed. Many local or industrial standards are established to regulate the test methods. However, there is no complete assessment method to evaluate and horizontal compare the radars. This paper introduces a performance assessment process to evaluate the automotive millimeter wave radar. Based on the established test method in local standards, this process measures the essential parameters of radar and then evaluates the radar in two aspects. One is the average value according to the development of the industry, the other is the requirement of the OEM. Then the weighted scores in range, velocity and angle domains can be obtained respectively and finally a through-out score is calculated. In order to demonstrate the assessment process, a large scale industrial assessment is conducted. More than 10 radar companies participate the assessment and 8 long range radars and 2 middle range radars are evaluated. The development of the radar industry is well revealed.
