Kotagedhe Palace is one of the historical buildings inherited from the Islamic Mataram Kingdom, Yogyakarta, Indonesia. Although it is an important heritage site, not many tourists come to visit the place. Apart from the fact that some of the buildings there are no longer intact, there is not much information about the area. To make historical information in the place easily accessible and interesting for visitors, this study proposed to make a mission-based mobile game entitled Relic of Mataram. The mission-based mobile game that was built combines Augmented Reality technology and gamification in the form of stories and missions. The game is played on-site, to increase visitor engagement and invite tourists to visit the Kotagedhe Palace. The game is built using the Game Development Life Cycle (GDLC) guidelines. Games that have been completed are tested to determine users’ acceptance on three aspects of usability, satisfaction, and material content. Testing was carried out using a questionnaire and assessed by adopting the concept of the System Usability Scale (SUS). The test results show that the usability aspect gets an average score of 71.5, the satisfaction aspect gets an average score of 83.45, and the material content gets an average score of 100. The three aspects of the test get a score greater than 70, so it can be said that the games built are acceptable to the community and can provide information to tourists about Kotagedhe Palace in an interesting way. Based on the satisfaction questionnaire, especially questions number 12, 14, and 17 regarding story, AR, and mission-based gameplay, it shows that Augmented Reality combined with story and gameplay in the form of mission-based gamified system has produced an interesting and satisfying combination to be used as a travel companion in exploring remnants of Kotagedhe Palace.
