Cognitive radio (CR) technology has gained attention in wireless communications for its ability to enhance spectrum utilization efficiency through the implementation of dynamic spectrum access. This technology enables secondary users (SUs), or unlicensed users, to access the radio spectrum of primary users (PUs) in a limited manner that doesn't interfere with the PUs. The implementation of spectrum handoff can enhance SU's throughput performance however it may cause high energy consumption. This, in turn, can reduce device lifetime and affect system performance, particularly for battery-operated CR devices. This chapter focuses on optimizing the available resources in the green CR system to maximize energy efficiency (EE) and throughput performance while maintaining system reliability. It also explores using energy beamforming techniques to enhance the throughput performance of multi-antenna CR systems. Furthermore, this chapter addresses the challenges associated with SU's spectrum sensing by introducing a new transmission protocol designed for smart sensing implementation.
