Chapter 9 discusses new literacies and the development of digital literacy skills. While there is an ongoing debate about screentime, especially in the early years, new literacies skills, including digital literacies require attention across age groups. Topics address developmentally appropriate approaches to learning from and with technology and how concepts about print have evolved to now include concepts about different forms of text and media. An emphasis on fostering children’s digital literacy skills from a critical standpoint is shared. Guidelines and support for incorporating digital literacy and technologies into a balanced literacy environment are included. Chapter 9 ends with a list of tips for supporting the development of digital literacy at home and in the classroom as well as recommended literacy apps for toddlers, preschoolers, and kindergarteners.
