A cutting-edge idea, the Internet of Things (IoT) provides numerous applications that are now a part of our daily lives. IoT and connected device numbers are rising rapidly. However, transferring the accompanying enormous amounts of data produced by these IoT devices to the cloud presents challenges in terms of latency, bandwidth, and many other aspects that raise concerns about security and privacy, as well as IoT device power consumption and service availability. Recently discovered security flaws in several IoT apps could endanger physical systems. The two main causes of many security problems in IoT apps are inadequate security architecture and severe resource constraints. Edge computing (EC) is a practical method to address these issues because it places data processing and storing close to end users and IoT devices. This chapter comprehensively analyses EC and associated computing paradigms, highlighting their similarities and differences. Additionally, a discussion of the major security and privacy threats and assaults in the context of EC-based IoT is included, along with additional potential solutions. IoT systems may be used in various ways to carry out daily duties, as shown in some of the case studies that are examined and explored.
