The Internet of Things (IoT) stands out as a highly promising technology within the realm of information technology. However, IoT is still confronting security issues during communication. Classical cryptographic elements like RSA, AES, DES, and hashing are extensively recognized primitives. The robustness of these algorithms relies on intricate mathematical constructs. The configurations of private and public keys are susceptible to known-plaintext attacks (KPA), chosen-plaintext attacks (CPA) and linear cryptanalysis, rendering them prone to Man-in-the-Middle attacks (MITM). Blockchain features such as distributed networks and immutability provide complete, secure approaches for IoT frameworks. This chapter aims to highlight the importance of incorporating Blockchain technology within the IoT ecosystem to establish trust among devices within the IoT network. Particularly, ?rst, we provide the IoT security concerns and existing solutions based on classical cryptographic primitives. Then, we describe a detailed overview of blockchain technology. We then analyse blockchain technology and its associated protocols for securing IoT communication. The requirements of Blockchain, deployment of Blockchain for IoT-based smart applications and Blockchain-based secured solutions have also been analysed in our work. Finally, we present a comparative analysis of existing authentication techniques compared to blockchain-based solutions for secure IoT communication frameworks.
