Cluster-based Fast Time Synchronization for Wireless Sensor Networks

Juncen Zhou, Rui Chen, Yuwei Guan · 2024

Wireless sensor networks have the advantages including low power consumption, easy deployment and self-adaptation, making it widely applied in industry, smart home, medical care and so on. More and more attentions are now being paid to various problems in the ecological environment. Wireless sensor networks are widely used by scholars for environmental monitoring. Low-overhead, robustness and fast convergence of time synchronization are important for wireless sensor networks applied in forests. This paper proposes a cluster-based fast time synchronization algorithm, namely, cluster-based fast time synchronization (CFTS). The algorithm divides the network into main and sub networks by generating a topology. Then two-way exchange of information is used for synchronization in the main network to ensure the time synchronization accuracy of the main network. After that, the nodes in the sub network use passive monitoring to synchronize with the main network. The simulation results show that CFTS algorithm reduces the communication overhead and improves the convergence speed in comparison to ATS.
