Review and implementation of image segmentation techniques in Python

Image segmentation is one of the central techniques in image processing. It is important as it forms basis of various other computer vision and image processing algorithms. Segmentation finds its uses in various fields like automation, medical image processing, satellite image processing. Segmentation refers to partitioning of an image in order to extract useful information from it. There are several techniques available for image segmentation. There is no single technique that could cater to all segmentation tasks. All techniques have their pros and cons. This chapter deals with three different image segmentation techniques. The thresholding-based image segmentation is introduced first followed by discussion of edge detection algorithms in images. Machine-learning based image segmentation techniques are introduced with a comprehensive discussion on K-Means clustering-based image segmentation. A step-by-step process is provided for the practical implementation of all the techniques in Python.
