Cybersecurity Awareness and Education
Donavon Johnson · 2024
This chapter delves into the critical role of cybersecurity awareness and education in the Global South. It underscores the impact of knowledge and certainty on cybersecurity outcomes, stressing the need for comprehensive awareness at all levels. The growing digital connectivity in the region brings opportunities alongside unwanted threats, necessitating a focus on addressing vulnerabilities. Humans, as cyberenvironment users, are often the weakest link in the cybersecurity chain, making it essential to educate and raise awareness among individuals. The chapter highlights the top-down approach, with policy and decision-makers being crucially well-informed. Their awareness directly shapes security frameworks and resource allocation for prevention, detection, and incident response. Furthermore, the chapter underscores the significance of educating public administration employees and the entire workforce on cybersecurity risks and preventative measures. Comprehensive intra-organizational awareness training programs, targeting all staff levels, minimize vulnerabilities stemming from employee actions. Promoting cybersecurity awareness among the general public is also essential. Strategic initiatives, covering diverse age groups and sectors, should address relevant topics and employ appropriate delivery methods. Garnering public buy-in remains a challenge, as individuals may perceive cybersecurity as a distant concern. Overcoming this requires urgency and leveraging digital literacy skills to enhance comprehension and understanding. Ultimately, this chapter underscores the paramount importance of cybersecurity awareness and education throughout the Global South. By fostering knowledge, raising awareness, and instilling a sense of urgency, countries can strengthen their cybersecurity capacity, mitigate threats, and ensure a secure digital environment for individuals, organizations, and the entire nation.
