It is generally accepted that the frequenci es of the first two iormants are the most important factors in the recogniti on of vowel sounds (I, 2, 3).Temporal factors, however, are also important (A, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9).The question therefore arises as to how formant frequency informati on is combined with duration infor mation in order for a vowel sound to be identified .
