Enhancing IoT Security Affordably with Raspberry Pi and Open-Source IDS/IPS

The Internet of Things (IoT) comprises a network of interconnected devices that exchange data with each other and connect to the internet. However, the rapid increase in the number of these devices raises concerns about their security. These IoT gadgets, constrained by limited resources, are vulnerable to security threats, making them attractive targets for cyber attackers. If the attackers exploit these vulnerabilities, they could sneak into sensitive data, mess with services, or even cause real-world problems. Securing these IoT devices is crucial, but it can be quite a pricey affair. It involves using fancy tools, software, and systems that might not fit into the budget of small businesses or home offices, putting their networks and livelihoods at risk. Therefore, it is important to enhance the security of IoT devices on a budget to benefit them. The paper presents a cost-effective approach to enhance IoT devices’ security by implementing an open-source Suricata IDS/IPS on a Raspberry Pi. The implementation includes the use of security rules and penetration testing to assess the effectiveness of the solution.
