Energy Density-Based Median Filter: Detection and Suppression of Impulse Noise Clusters in Aircraft-Induced Seismic Signal

False detection often occurs when detecting aircraft by the acoustic-to-seismic coupling phenomenon, which is due to the existence of impulse noise and impulse noise clusters in the collected signals. Due to the similarity between aircraft signals and impulse noise clusters in both time and frequency domains, the existing noise suppression methods are difficult to effectively suppress noise when dealing with impulse noise clusters and may damage the aircraft signal, which will affect the result of detection and further research. The analysis shows that there are differences in energy density (ED) between impulse noise clusters and aircraft signals. Therefore, this letter proposes an ED-based median (EDBM) filter to suppress impulse noise clusters. We determine the approximate location and duration of the aircraft signals and noise by the characteristic function and envelope. Whether it is noise is judged by its ED, and the impulse noise is suppressed by median filter. The EDBM filter has great suppression effect and little damage in the case of different noise durations, and the false detection rate (FDR) is significantly reduced in both numerical simulation and actual data.
