Improving Rhythm and Tempo
Molly Gebrian · 2024
Abstract A steady sense of pulse and accurate rhythm are foundational skills for all musicians. Often the metronome is the main tool used to improve these skills, but different areas of the brain are active when the metronome is on versus off. Because of this, practicing with a metronome alone is not enough to improve sense of pulse or rhythmic accuracy. Alternate ways of using the metronome are presented in light of this information. Physical movement, ideally involving the entire body, is also highly effective for enhancing sense of pulse. This chapter presents research supporting this idea, as well as specific strategies for musicians to put this information into action.
