Kirchhoff–Love and Reissner–Mindlin Plates

A plate is a thin flat solid structure carrying transverse load. In this chapter, we develop the finite-element method for structural components that can be modeled as thin or moderately thick plates. The starting point of the formulation is the principle of virtual displacements for three-dimensional continuum. Certain geometric constraints on the plate thickness and transverse deflection permit postulating simple forms of the displacement field, and enable reduction of a three-dimensional problem to a two-dimensional one.
