Security Issues and Defense Mechanism Using IoMT

Lekha Rani · 2024

The Internet of Medical Things (IoMT) is an expeditiously expanding technology that holds the capacity to transform the healthcare sector by furnishing patients with more individualized and streamlined healthcare services through the implementation of connected devices, sensors, and other medical equipment. However, as the use of IoMT grows, it brings significant security risks that must be addressed to protect patient privacy and safety. One of the major security concerns with IoMT is the vast amount of sensitive patient information generated and transmitted, which can be attractive targets for cybercriminals. In addition, the use of diverse devices, including personal technology integration, poses an additional challenge to implementing uniform security protocols across all systems. Defense mechanisms such as encryption techniques, access control measures and network security protocols have been developed to mitigate these risks. However, the effectiveness of these security measures depends on the security awareness of healthcare users, vendors, and novice IoMT adopters. Thus, education and training programs must be developed to promote security awareness among all personnel involved in IoMT to ensure that they are aware of the risks and mitigation strategies to protect patient privacy and safety.
