Accountability is a key element in understanding the exercise of political responsibility in democratic societies. Each political culture has its own conception of how this public servant accountability is to be specifically produced, sometimes limited to purely administrative issues, sometimes with an essentially political component. Free and pluralistic elections are one of the most common and effective mechanisms by which politicians are held accountable.
