Fingerprint and Iris Based Voting System

J Sujithra, N Archana, G. Vaishali · 2024

A biometric voting system ensures a voter's identity before allowing them to cast their ballot by using distinctive physical or behavioral traits like fingerprints, iris scans, or facial recognition .This technology aims to enhance security and prevent voter fraud by ensuring that each vote is linked to a legitimate and unique individual. However, the implementation and effectiveness of biometric voting systems can vary, and concerns about privacy and accuracy have been raised in some cases. Nowadays Voting procedures can vary by location, but generally, citizens must register to vote, present valid identification at the polling station, cast their vote in private, and their ballots are counted to determine the election outcome. Specific details and requirements can differ by country, state, or municipality. In traditional voting method the voters has to go to their respective booth that may be their native place just to cast a single vote which is time consuming. In this paper the technique aims to boost voter turnout while lowering the costs and logistical hassles associated with conventional voting procedures. The Aadhaar database has been linked by the Indian government(which include fingerprint and iris) with the EPIC(voter id that has the constituency details). This database is used for authentication of the voter.Image segmentation, normalization, feature extraction, and matching are used to create an eye's iris template. All of these steps are crucial to getting an iris signature. In order to acquire the parameters for the iris circle, we first took an image and applied the Hough transform. The process of normalizing is used to produce a rectangular, dimensionless iris picture after segmentation has been used to create the segmented iris image and located the iris' borders. Finally, In order to create an iris signature, the phase data from the iris is extracted using a 2D Gabor filter. For matching, the Hamming distance is employed. We utilized the MATLAB framework to code this project.
