Designing and Analyzing Questionnaires and Surveys

Martin Schrepp · 2024

Surveys are a popular method to collect information regarding the user experience of products. Participants can be asked to describe the strengths and weaknesses of a product in the form of open-ended questions. Demographic data, such as age, gender, or occupation, can help to get a better understanding concerning the typical users of the product. The same is true for information concerning typical usage parameters, like usage frequency or experience with the product or similar products. In addition, objective and reliable quantitative data that describe how well a product complies with typical quality aspects, for example efficiency or learnability, can be measured by including standardized UX questionnaires in a survey. This chapter describes several well-known UX questionnaires and their typical application scenarios. Methods to construct new UX questionnaires and quality criteria for such questionnaires are discussed. This chapter tries in addition to provide hints on how to build successful surveys in practice. Basic rules for the formulation of good questions, hints on how to find the most suitable standard questionnaires to cover the research questions, typical channels to collect data and the associated benefits and problems of each channel, as well as tips for the analysis and presentation of survey results are provided.
