Voice Interaction Design

James R. Lewis · 2024

This chapter on voice interaction design starts with the technological and psycholinguistic aspects that establish the boundaries of effective design of voice applications. The major speech technologies are speech recognition, synthetic speech production, and dialog management. Key concepts in human language and communication include phonology, prosody, conversation, timing, and social considerations. From this foundation, this chapter moves to general considerations for voice interaction design such as the contexts in which voice interaction should or should not be used, how to collect information using menus and forms, how to include human support, and appropriate personality/persona for voice assistants. This chapter ends with guidance on detailed voice interaction design for timing, dialog design, prompt design, strategies for confirming user input, and thoughts about the future of voice interaction design.
