The goal of shape and structure optimization in mechanics is to determine the shape of a mechanical system which is optimal with respect to objective and constraint functionals. For example, if one wants to avoid plastification the values of the von Mises yield functional should be small enough, or if one wants to avoid crack growth, the energy release rate (or the stress intensity factors) should not exceed their critical values.
