The selection of relay nodes plays a serious role in wireless sensor network while performing the data transmission process between source node to destination node when nodes present out of range of communication. Relaying is done when the destination node not able to access the data which is sent by the sender node. Therefore an efficient cooperative relay node selection (ECRNS) protocol is suggested in this manuscript. This protocol mainly suggested to reduce the congestion rate as well as the retransmission process during multi-hop communication. The cooperative intermediate relays are selected by computing the holding time and energy cost. The nodes that possess high holding time and high energy cost are selected as cooperative relay nodes for sending the DATA_MSG from transmitting node to receiving node. The holding time is computed by analyzing the relay nodes channel state transitions. The suggested protocol is configured and simulated for evaluating the system performance. The system performance is compared with reported protocols and it is evident that the suggested ECRNS protocol outperforms others.
