Advancing HCI and Design Methods to Empower Gig Workers
Shuhao Ma · Designing Interactive Systems Conference · 2024
In the context of the global expansion of the gig economy and growing concerns about worker justice, HCI and design studies have made various contributions to this field. Most research primarily addresses the challenges gig workers encounter on digital platforms, yet practical aspects such as infrastructural and environmental factors often receive insufficient attention. Additionally, there is a significant lack of HCI and design methods for engaging with platform designers, which could limit the research’s ability to influence real-world worker practices. My doctoral study employs comprehensive HCI and design approaches to understand, engage with, and address both gig worker issues and platform design challenges. This study aims to promote worker-centered design practices and enhance HCI and design methods to facilitate worker well-being and social justice.
