Conceptual Designs for Security interfaces in Industrial Control Systems

Karen Li, Anne Roudaut, Awais Rashid · Designing Interactive Systems Conference · 2024

Industrial Control Systems (ICS), vital for managing diverse industrial processes, face frequent security threats due to infrastructure vulnerabilities. Challenges such as multi-user access, logging procedures, and web-transmitted information security underscore design flaws balancing security and usability. To address this, we conducted a participatory study (N=18) pairing design and security experts to brainstorm interface design ideas, followed by reflective semi-structured interviews. Initial insights highlight tangible user interfaces (TUIs) as a solution to enhance security and user engagement. By integrating human-computer interaction and cybersecurity insights, we propose TUIs as a means to raise security awareness and facilitate proactive risk management, ensuring continuous energy supply and safeguarding critical infrastructure.
