Pre-service teacher education for STEAM activities that combine data modeling and design processes

Takashi Kawakami, Keiichi Nishimura · 2024

Educating pre-service teachers (PSTs) to impart lessons that incorporate a STEAM education approach, which emphasizes the relevance of each STEAM subject and domain in each lesson, is a major challenge in Japan and globally. In this chapter, we aim to address this issue from the perspective of mathematics education by incorporating data modeling and design processes that highlight the role of each STEAM subject and domain, with a focus on mathematics and engineering. For this purpose, we examine the Japanese context to present an example of PST education for STEAM activities that combine complementary data modeling and design processes, from which implications are drawn regarding STEAM PST education.
