Conceptual framework from STEM to STEAM

Many nations around the world, including the United States, are promoting and expanding STEM/STEAM education. The government of Japan has also promoted the policy of STEAM education. In Japan, the Ministry of Economy, Trade, and Industry has developed STEAM education centered on high schools and a STEAM library for learning STEAM. This chapter describes its framework and outlook from a theoretical perspective of STEAM education based on Japan&s;s educational policy on STEAM education. This chapter focuses on the roles of Science, Technology, Engineering, Art and Liberal Arts, and Mathematics as components of STEAM according to the framework of subjects in the Japanese education policy. Furthermore, in response to the trend from STEM to STEAM in the United States, the relationship between “A” and “E” in STEAM is described according to the framework of subjects in Japan.
