Social Media Skirmish

C. S. Raghuvanshi, Hari Om Sharan, Hemant Kumar Soni · 2024

Fake news and propaganda on social media have the power to influence public view in a negative direction, to promote violent radicalism, and, finally, to weaken democracies and reduce trust in the democratic system. Tech organizations in the social media space are facing criticism and challenges for how they handle misleading information on their platforms. Consider social media platforms in two different ways: One way of thinking of them is as tools that allow people to write, share, and publish whatever they want. On the other hand, we might assert that social media platforms have evolved into content custodians. Social media tech businesses should assume some accountability for the content posted on their platforms and offer some advice on how to deal with propaganda, false information, and fake news. This chapter explores the impact of social media contention on societal harmony and how it becomes challenging to maintain law and order situation in society, especially in crucial times such as elections and other social gathering situations such as festivals. This chapter comprises advanced computing technology such as machine learning, deep learning, and natural language processing to detect, prevent, and prohibit the spread of such fake and misinformation.
