A Research on a Feedback Device to Represent Gun Recoil in a Virtual Reality Game

Shoon Komori, Tomokazu Ishikawa · 2024

This paper proposes a solenoid-based haptic device with an elevation angle to enhance the immersive experience of gun shooting in virtual reality. The proposed method focuses on the bounce of the gun barrel, which is rarely considered in existing methods, to achieve more effective and realistic haptics. The direction of the solenoid can be changed when it is attached to the controller, and the recoil of gun shooting was adjusted by changing the direction of force application. Finally, an experimental VR gun shooting scene was created and we conducted an experiment to investigate user experience. As a result, although the emphasis on vertical recoil by changing the angle of the solenoid was not effective for all users, there is a correlation between vertical recoil and overall reality.
