Incidental Learning of Multi-Word Expressions

Suhad Sonbul, Anna Siyanova‐Chanturia · 2024

The past years have seen a lot of interest in the incidental learning of multi-word expressions (MWEs). While most studies within this line of enquiry have employed off-line measures, more recently, researchers have started to use on-line psycholinguistic techniques. Chapter 6 seeks to provide hands-on guidance for researchers interested in exploring the incidental learning of MWEs. The chapter starts with an overview of critical issues in this area of research. This is followed by an examination of the most prominent methodological decisions to be made when designing a study on the incidental learning of MWEs. These decisions are further illustrated through a suggested design of a study that examines the incidental learning of one type of MWEs – idioms – from reading using eye-tracking methodology.
