Sir M.V. Berry graduated with a PhD from the University of Saint Andrews. During his entire professorial career, he was based at the University of Bristol. He is known for his work on geometrical phases and his contributions to mathematical physics. He was elected Fellow of the Royal Society in 1982, knighted in 1996 and received many prizes such as the Dirac Medal of the International Center for Theoretical Physics and the Wolf Prize.
