Decentralizing IoT Data Ownership and Control with Blockchain Technology
Moslem Attar Raouf · 2024
As the Internet of Things (IoT) continues to expand, the challenges of managing and securing the vast amounts of data generated by these devices have become increasingly apparent. Traditional centralized data management approaches are often inadequate to address the security, privacy, and scalability requirements of IoT applications. Blockchain technology, with its inherent characteristics of decentralization, immutability, and transparency, offers a promising solution to these challenges. This paper explores the potential of blockchain technology to decentralize IoT data ownership and control, enabling a more secure, privacy-preserving, and efficient way of managing data in the IoT ecosystem. We discuss the key benefits of using blockchain for IoT data management, including data provenance, data ownership, data access control, and data monetization. Furthermore, we address the challenges and considerations of implementing blockchain-based IoT data management solutions. These challenges include data heterogeneity, scalability, and performance. Finally, we provide an overview of emerging trends and applications of blockchain technology in IoT, such as smart contracts, decentralized applications (DApps), and data market-places. We conclude by highlighting the potential of blockchain to revolutionize the IoT ecosystem and enable a new era of secure, privacy-preserving, and efficient data management.
