Jumping on the Accelerating Grid Train [Book Review]

Philip T. Krein · IEEE Power Electronics Magazine · 2024

In much of the world, photovoltaic (PV) power systems crossed a major threshold of “grid parity” by 2014, based on my personal experience with SolarBridge Technologies. When this happened, the operating-life value of energy produced by a complete PV plant installation dropped below the end customer electricity price. During 2017–2018, system costs had dropped below “cost parity,” when PV energy became competitive with coal and natural gas. At the time, one tagline of my presentations was “What happens when solar energy drops below grid parity and nobody notices?” Costs continue to drop. As this summary book by Divan and Sharma admirably documents, everybody notices now!
