Renovating Cpr E 231: Cybersecurity Concepts and Tools
Jacob Foster · 2023
The core cybersecurity curriculum at Iowa State University offers a largely hands-on experience with the technical aspects of cybersecurity. One such example is the class Cpr E 231: Cybersecurity Concepts and Tools. The labs within Cpr E 231 give students hands-on experience with applicable offensive security concepts, tools, and methodologies. However, some of these labs relied heavily on Metasploit and legacy operating systems. This creative component revolved around redesigning the Cpr E 231 labs to include more modern techniques, tools, and processes. The following pages introduce several labs. Comparisons and contrasts will be drawn from the original labs to the new/updated labs generated from this creative component. Special attention is dedicated to acknowledging and analyzing the tradeoffs between removing certain portions of the former labs to incorporate new material into the new ones.
