The use of tabletop games as a training tool for teaching cybersecurity
Benjamin LaVan · 2023
Cybercrime has surged in recent years, creating a shortage of skilled cybersecurity professionals. Initiatives to address this crisis, such as promoting cybersecurity courses, face challenges due to outdated teaching methods. Another proposed solution is making cybersecurity certifications mandatory, which often focus on theory and can be costly for smaller enterprises, leaving professionals needing more skills for immediate employment. Given these challenges, an urgent and affordable solution is needed to bridge the cybersecurity workforce gap. Innovative training programs like game-based learning, including tabletop exercises, show promise in enhancing cybersecurity incident response training. Tabletop exercises improve decision-making and equip professionals with technical and non- technical skills, addressing deficiencies observed in new graduates and some experienced personnel. This approach complements traditional methods, offering experiential learning for more effective preparation against real-life cybersecurity challenges
