Non-terrestrial network (NTN) is anticipated to play an important role for achieving space-ground integration in the sixth generation (6G) network. In this work, a general preamble design framework based on the so-called sequence selection pattern (SSP) is proposed for random access (RA) in satellite communication. Under the proposed framework, we present the new interleaved cascaded preamble (I-CP), where the SSP is a binary synchronization sequence. Moreover, we devise the SSP-aided cross-correlation (SSP-CC) algorithm for the I-CP scheme to obtain an accurate estimation of the timing offset (TO). Last but not the least, we introduce a method to generate the m-sequence based SSPs, which can provide further performance gains. Simulation results show that the achievable performance can be substantially improved by the proposed scheme in comparison to existing methods.
