The language technology industry plays a significant role within the language industry as a whole. With the emergence of new technologies such as neural machine translation, the importance of traditional language and translation technology applications has been challenged. This chapter begins with an overview of the language technology industry, discussing its history and the various applications that the language technology industry provides as well as reasons for its continued relevance. The chapter then presents and discusses the typical roles of people working in the language technology industry. Finally, the chapter examines the skills and competencies required by language technology developers, providers and consultants. This is compared with the educational backgrounds of people working in the language technology industry, using data from professionals’ online profiles, in an attempt to understand the relationship between the wider language industry and language technology developers in terms of the skills and competencies required.
