COVID-19 early successes and failures

COVID-19 emerged as a formidable challenge that demanded rapid and effective responses from governments, healthcare systems, and societies worldwide. In this chapter, we focus on reasons for differences in the efficacy of various steps taken by the countries in dealing with COVID-19, including travel bans, lockdowns, border closures, school shutdowns, work from home, etc. even as it ravaged through communities resulting in devastating number of cases and deaths all over the world. We focus in particular on the impact of public health infrastructure, governance mechanisms, and other unique factors that distinguish countries from each other on their ability to slow down and control the spread of COVID-19 in their communities. We also highlight the differences in leadership styles demonstrated by business managers during this challenging period. We examine the early successes and failures in the global fight against COVID-19, shedding light on the strategies that yielded positive outcomes and the shortcomings that hindered effective containment. The outbreak of COVID-19 in late 2019 brought nations around the world to a crossroads, demanding swift and effective action to mitigate its spread and impact. Governments faced the daunting challenge of protecting public health while minimizing disruptions to economies and societies. In response, diverse strategies were implemented, reflecting variations in political, cultural, and healthcare systems. This chapter examines various strategies employed by governments to tackle COVID-19.
