How to Work with the Sound Shifts Tables

Beth McGuire · 2016

This is an American English accent model that Dudley Knight synthesized to teach a model of American English that employs the details of phonemes without regional variation. He referred to this model in his article on Standard Speech in The Vocal Vision . Although he changed the name of this model to Formal Speech in his book Speaking with Skill , this workbook will use the older term D.A.E. when referring to the model. This is a model, and is used as one, since no one speaks this way all of the time. Elements of it are used, discarded, or modified, depending on the character the actor is playing. The model is a linguistic work-out for American English and provides a clear frame of reference for accent work. D.A.E. is the base accent used in exploring the sound changes for the African accents in this workbook.
