The primary aim of smart surroundings is to improve the ease and efficiency of human existence. The Internet of Things (IoT) concept has lately evolved into a smart environment technology. In any real-world smart ecosystem based on the IoT idea, security and privacy are considered critical challenges. Security flaws in IoT-based systems provide security hazards that impact smart environment applications. As a result, intrusion detection systems intended for IoT contexts are critical for mitigating IoT-related security assaults that exploit some of these security flaws. Traditional intrusion detection systems (IDS) may not be an option for IoT settings due to the restricted computation and storage capabilities of IoT devices, as well as the particular protocols employed. This chapter provides an in-depth examination of the most recent IDS created for the IoT paradigm, with an emphasis on the relevant approaches, features, and procedures. This chapter also delves into the IoT architecture, new security vulnerabilities, and their relationship to the IoT architecture’s layers. Despite prior research on the design and implementation of IDS for the IoT paradigm, establishing efficient, reliable, and resilient IDS for IoT-based smart settings remains a critical problem. At the end of the chapter, key factors for the development of such IDS are provided as a future view.
