Abstract A smart home is a place where various technological equipment and gadgets are linked together to provide people with practical services all the time. Due to the multiple advantages Internet of Things (IoT) technology and devices offer, smart home applications are increasingly used by businesses and consumers. These gadgets, which have sensors, cameras, and actuators, collect data from the environment and carry out activities, making users’ daily lives and jobs easier. Real-time monitoring, remote control, intruder detection, gas/fire alarms, and other features are important characteristics of smart houses. Implementing security and privacy safeguards is crucial to protect users’ and companies’ data while assuring the delivery of dependable services, especially given the sensitive and personal data maintained within smart homes. An overview of the key Internet of Things (IoT)-based technologies utilized in smart homes is given in this chapter. The definition of a “smart home” gives the introduction and the structure for the evaluation. The chapter describes the various user and system roles of smart houses, provides a generic design that uses IoT technology, and places smart homes within the larger framework of the smart grid. The parts that follow concentrate on software options and elements of smart home management systems, on communication technologies related to smart homes, and on the privacy and security issues that modern smart houses’ interconnectedness raises. The challenges that smart home technologies now confront, as well as their broad acceptance, a dedicated section discusses the current obstacles faced by smart home technologies, their widespread adoption, and suggests innovative solutions and future trends. And the study’s conclusions and suggestions lead to a greater understanding of consumers’ developing views towards privacy in smart homes as IoT home devices become more commonplace.
