Recent Advancements and Use Cases on Co-Creation, Procedural Content Generation, and Computational Creativity in Video Games
Elif Sürer · 2024
Video games have provided invaluable environments and unique testbeds to develop, build, and test algorithms and methodologies targeting artificial and computational intelligence, procedural content generation, and computational creativity. Artificial and computational intelligence in video games has become an essential research domain with a focus on reinforcement learning; game agents; and diverse tasks such as collaboration, competition, adaptation, and navigation. The advancements in procedural content generation, where parametric and automated high-quality content is the final aim, elaborated the environments where the game agents have been tested while enabling co-creation with humans and agents. All these learning and automation practices enriched the field of computational creativity, where the lines between human creativity and computational intelligence have blurred. This chapter aims to introduce a literature survey with the recent algorithms, methods, and use cases from the game artificial and computational intelligence, procedural content generation, and computational creativity research domains while also discussing and challenging the definitions of human creativity, computational creativity, and co-creation with agents. Moreover, this chapter presents recent discussions, questions, and arguments regarding the ethics of using artificial and computational intelligence in video games, content generation, data augmentation, co-creation, and intellectual property ownership to enhance further discussions and provide guidelines.
