On the Suitability of Cloud Models for MEC Deployment Purposes

Álvaro Santos, N. Correia, Jorge Bernardino · 2023

Cloud capabilities closer to information sources brings latency and privacy/security benefits, better data contextualization, bandwidth utilization and performance, which translates into more efficient service response. Given these expectations, European Telecommunication Standards Institute (ETSI) initiated the standardization on Multi-access Edge Computing (MEC), so that the structure of micro/mini-clouds at the edge is defined. Considering this context, this article presents a study on the features of the most widely used public clouds, as well as private clouds. The analysis shows that major cloud service providers are offering similar services, indicating that they are taking technological developments and customer needs seriously. Along with the platforms used for implementing private clouds, these can be a reference for defining the developments of MECs. The article also presents gathered information on the characteristics and management services offered by the main players in the provision of cloud services, for defining future research on automating and optimizing deployment processes in Edge.
