Implementing Self-Managing Teams in Organizations: A Systematic Review of Best Practices and Evolution
Journal of System and Management Sciences · 2024
This systematic literature review aims to identify best practices for implementing self-managing teams (SMTs) in organizations.Following the PRISMA framework, the author searched Web of Science and Scopus databases and analyzed the findings using a machine learning tool and Leavitt's organizational model. The review included 35 empirical studies across various industries and periods. The findings highlight vital recommendations and practices across the dimensions of structure, goals, participants, and technology, as well as the phases of pre-implementation, implementation, and post-implementation.The review reveals the evolution of SMTs from an initially "empty method" to a more complex framework that integrates with agile methodologies. The author identifies research gaps, such as the limited attention to technological factors, and provides recommendations for future research and practice. The findings can inform organizations seeking to adopt SMTs and complement existing agile frameworks. However, the review is limited by the reliance on qualitative studies and the potential for publication bias.
