Creating Our Makerspace: Designing Social and Material Conditions for Community Engagement in the Makerspace
Xinxin Feng · Proceedings. · 2024
This study presents a case for designing social and material conditions to privilege community knowledge in the makerspace with members from non-dominant communities.I conduct a design-based research where young people and community members worked together to design a new makerspace.I explore how re-mediating the social and material aspects of the learning environment can shift maker education from dominant narratives to relevant and consequential communal learning.I find that intergenerational interactions in story and artifact sharing enabled participants to reconsider the value of community assets in the makerspace.
