Kelli Adam, Mahjabin Chowdhury · Proceedings. · 2024
This paper critically examines the role of generative artificial intelligence (GenAI), specifically ChatGPT and Grammarly, in supporting academic writing with a focus on the role of prompt engineering. The study centers on a case involving a college sophomore who employs these AI tools to complete an English composition assignment. We evaluate how AI chatbots potentially enhance knowledge construction and academic performance through the lens of the Unified Theory of Acceptance and Use of Technology (UTAUT), constructionist theory, and social cognitive theory. The paper also explores the ethical considerations regarding the use of AI in academic writing, including issues of attribution and intellectual property, which are of the most importance. The study underscores the urgent need to develop comprehensive rules and guidelines for AI use in educational settings, ensuring responsible integration that contributes positively to the educational process.
