Yuhan Lin, David Weintrop, Jason McKenna · Proceedings. · 2024

This study explores high school students' perceptions of "real programming" in the context of block-based programming environments, specifically focusing on VEXcode and Scratch. The research found students held diverging views on the authenticity of block-based programming. These findings present a more nuance view on students' perceptions of blockbased programming, showing that attribution of authenticity extends beyond block-based interface itself to also include the environment its situated in and the programming tasks and capabilities it supports.
