Switch mode: How Prior Experiences Shapes How Learners Program in a Hybrid Programming Environments

Yuhan Lin, David Weintrop, Jason McKenna · Proceedings. · 2024

This paper presents a case study on the differing experiences of two students learning to program with a hybrid programming environment designed to support learners transitioning from block-based programming to text-based programming.Despite different levels of prior experience and confidence, both students found their level of comfort with programming by developing their own methods for authoring commands based on the supports available in the environment. This work explores how the same environment supported learners in developing distinct programming approaches suited to their confidence, preference, and previous experiences.
