Avatar’s Expression of Drowsiness using Blink and Head Sway

Yudai KOSHI, Hisaya Tanaka · International Journal of Affective Engineering · 2024

Online classes are now being offered because of COVID-19. Students often turn off their cameras in class to protect their privacy. However, this obstructs nonverbal information and makes it difficult for teachers to monitor classroom behavior. Particularly, metaverse education promotes self-disclosure using avatars. However, avatars cannot convey real facial expressions. Furthermore, drowsiness can be evaluated using methods, such as facial expression ratings. However, there is no methods for expressing it in avatars based on biometric information. Therefore, we will study the expression method for making avatars convey drowsiness using biometric information. In our experiment, we asked participants to convey facial expressions of avatars and verified whether they were transmitted. Thus, the drowsiness expression that combined blinking and head sway strongly transmitted drowsiness among people. Additionally, we found that head sway accentuated the drowsiness expression.
