Smart buildings utilize Internet of Things (IoT) devices, sensors, software, and Internet connectivity to monitor various aspects of the building, analyze data, and extract insights to enhance the building's environment and operations. Although smart technology provides increased control over a building, it goes beyond simple “command and control” methods. The term “smart building” has likely been mentioned to you as a building owner or facility manager. Smart buildings, like other smart advancements, aim to offer greater control, specifically, control over the building's environment and operations. Imagine the ability to relocate occupants if particle levels become hazardous or the potential to save significant amounts of money on energy bills by strategically operating an HVAC system. These actions lead to tangible benefits that greatly assist the inhabitants, the bottom line, and the environment. Unsurprisingly, 70% of businesses plan to increase their investments in smart-building technologies in the future. The book chapter delves into the IoT in smart buildings and concludes with a case study, providing valuable insights for researchers working in this field.
