Fog Computing and Its Emergence with Reference to Applications and Potentialities in Traditional and Digital Educational Systems

P. K. Paul · 2024

Among the emerging technologies within Information Technology, Fog Computing is considered worthy and growing. It is very close with Cloud Computing and is considered as next-level Cloud development. Cisco, the major networking technology giant company is considered as the initial developer of Fog Computing, and later, other gradual development took place in the field of Fog Computing and it continues to rise gradually. Initially, Cisco popularized this technology as Cisco Fog Computing and later, contributions from other organizations and industries led to Fog Computing, in general. As far as general Fog Computing is concerned, IBM is sometimes considered as an important name. OpenFog, which was established in 2015, is also important, along with different founding member institutions, namely, ARM, Cisco, Microsoft Corporation, Dell, Intel, and from the university, the role of Princeton University. Fog Computing is known to have a decentralized architecture and it also preserves information between sources and also each cloud resource. Fog Computing enhances and speeds up data delivery, and reduces overhead data transfer, and also increases efficiency of the computation systems in a cloud network. It also reduces the need of the process and also holds a large amount of data quantities of superfluous data. This is considered as paradigm shifting of cloud towards healthy and sophisticated virtualization aided by not only cloud but also Internet of Things (IoT). Fog Computing not only helps in traditional education systems but also in online and digital educational systems. Its benefits include boosting educational institutions’ operations and functionalities. Fog computing supports platforms with agility and modern technologies for better educational management. In real time educational management, Fog computing can also be useful in online content management and student monitoring. Online learning management will be more flexible and sophisticated with potential Fog Computing applications. This chapter highlights the fundamentals of Fog Computing, including features, functions, and emergence. This chapter also highlights the basic role and potentialities of Fog Computing in educational systems and overall management.
